Meet Jessica, a seven-year-old hippopotamus from South Africa who has become the family pet of a game ranger who found the hippo as an injured baby and nursed her back to health. She only weighs about 3/4 of a ton. Not your average house pet.Attempts to reintroduce her to the wild have failed as she has become somewhat domesticated and feels at home with her human parents. Putting her back into the wild puts her at risk of being killed or attacked by other hippos, shot by farmers protecting crops, and besides she likes the comforts of home.
