Sunday Shopping Woes at Mic Mac

For a couple of years there has been a great deal of debate as to whether or not Nova Scotia should adopt Sunday shopping laws that would see malls, grocery stores, and other private companies to sell their wares and services on Sunday.
This is a very heated debate with the shopping public, the retail workers, and the retail owners. Now that the Christmas rush is over and the retail sector often goes into a period of slow sales and traffic, does it really make sense to have malls open on Sundays. I understand that grocery stores may want to take advantage of Sunday shopping because people are always in need of groceries, it is a store of repeatable purchases. But on the other hand, how many stores are there that look at Sunday as another day in which staff will need to be paid without any significant increase in weekly sales. People only need to buy so many leather jackets, so many bath products, or so many computers. Sunday shopping is hurting these businesses. Of course, stores "have the option" not to open on Sundays but is very much discouraged by mall management because they want to see all of the stores open.
On Saturday, the mall now closes at 6pm instead of the previous 9:30pm. People were complaining in the mall that it shouldn't close early...it should be opeCheck Spellingn late. As if there isn't enough time in the week to get shopping done. Prior to Sunday shopping, the malls were open 12 hours a day, 6 days a week...equals 72 hours!!! With Sunday shopping and the early close on Saturday evening...the mall is now open 74 hours.
I heard some people complain that they now wish Sunday shopping hadn't been enacted if the malls are going to be closed on Saturday night. Rodney MacDonald, in my opinion, made a grievous error in pushing so hard against Sunday shopping and then buckling when he faced a tough situation. Then he decided, without proper diligence and forethought to announce that Sunday shopping was all of a sudden open for business without restriction. Way to lose the retail vote in your next election. Just checking...but do banks open on Sundays?...What about the Liquor Stores?...or other government-run businesses?....right...of course not...that would be so unfair.
What's wrong with keeping Sunday as a day of rest...a day for family...a day with less stress?
