
Scientists at the University of Washington have developed an autonomous underwater vehicle that can stay out to sea for up to a year and dive to depths of nearly 9,000 feet -- nearly three times deeper than the deepest-diving military submarines.
This beast is made from carbon fibres that can withstand some pretty substantial pressures while at great depths. It has the ability to monitor ocean conditions deep below the surface and transmit information back to the surface.
This is a major step in ocean surveillance and data-gathering. It could potentially provide excellent information in understanding global warming. Al Gore will be pleased. For more...click here
