Watching a Big Game Together

Yesterday, Canada defeated Russia to win the World Junior Hockey Championship in Sweden. The game started during afternoon classes on Friday afternoon and due to fortunate scheduling I happen to not have classes to teach during the last couple of periods of the day.

Some other teachers had the same schedule and we were able to set up and LCD projector in the library and watch the first period on a big screen. Someone even made finger foods for the game. Canada scored a flurry of goals toward the end of the first period and I had promised some of the classes that I would relay updates as goals were scored. I got a nice little workout during the first period when Canada jumped to a 3-0 lead within a couple of minutes.

The first period ended just as the school bell rang to end the day. A number of us got together to watch the remainder of the game after school as a group. We all could have gone home to watch the final but there's something about watching the big games with a group. The excitement is that much greater, the conversations, debate, and banter are more interesting and when the right team wins there's a feeling of unity and camaraderie that is a beautiful thing.

Now that the World Juniors are over....it's somewhat disappointing but that also just makes it exciting again next year. Go Canada!
