Encyclopedia of Life Initiative

"Comprehensive, collaborative, ever-growing, and personalized, the Encyclopedia of Life is an ecosystem of websites that makes all key information about life on Earth accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world. Our goal is to create a constantly evolving encyclopedia that lives on the Internet, with contributions from scientists and amateurs alike. To transform the science of biology, and inspire a new generation of scientists, by aggregating all known data about every living species. And ultimately, to increase our collective understanding of life on Earth, and safeguard the richest possible spectrum of biodiversity."

This is an interesting idea and venture. The Encyclopedia of Life Project will attempt to document the 1.8 million species known to mankind currently with a detailed page of information and hopefully pictures of each species. This is a massive undertaking obviously and will take many years to complete. Currently, they are building the framework for the project and have a few demonstration pages accessible.

It is too soon to predict how long it will take to fully document, catalog, and list all 1.8 million species on the Encyclopedia of Life site. The intention is to make key components of the Encyclopedia available to the general public starting some time in 2008. As a ballpark estimate, they are hoping that a full encyclopedia would be ready in about 10 years. Of course...this is all subject to change. This will serve as such a great resource for learning.
