Michaelle Jean, the current Governor-General of Canada is visiting Nova Scotia and yesterday delivered a historic speech at Province House.
Much of her speech focused on the struggles of society with racism and discrimination. Not only does it affect those being discriminated against...but also those discriminating and society as a whole.
She spoke of cherishing freedom and working to protect it, making reference to events such as Joseph Howe's libel defence speech back in 1835, and also to learn from the lack of freedom in the Acadian Expulsion of 1755 and the destruction of Africville here in Halifax.
Her visit also included meeting with a group of approximately 30 new women immigrants to Canada to discuss and round-table about the struggles they faced and continue to face in their attempts to becomes established in our country. She will also be speaking today at Prince Andrew High School with a group of students and participants in a Canada-Africa Youth Forum about new and future involvement in Canada's partnership with Africa.
