Barbaro, the winner of last year's Kentucky Derby was euthanized this morning after a year of ICU treatment. He broke one of his legs just into the Preakness Stakes later in the year and that led to his eventual demise.
Horses are such elegant, powerful, and graceful animals. When they are put into racing and the stresses, torque, and forces become active, it can be a recipe for disaster however. When a horse breaks its leg in a race, the road to recovery is very difficult and often results in the horse being put down shortly thereafter.
Barbaro's situation was atypical in that not only had he won the nation's heart winning the Derby but after the accident at the Preakness Stake he still retained the affection of the horse-racing public and beyond.
After many injuries and complications, the decision was made to put Barbaro down and end his suffering. To read more about Barbaro...click on the post title to link to a recent ESPN article.
